RCN Metro Extends Ethernet Services to Global Community
May 27, 2010 – RCN Metro Optical Networks, a division of RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI) and a premier provider of fiber optic-based network solutions, announced today it is offering its award-winning Ethernet services to local, national, and international service providers via Ethernet Exchange Carriers in New York City and Chicago at bandwidths from 1 Mbps to 10 Gbps. Additional regions will be announced throughout the year.
RCN Metro has teamed with leading Ethernet Exchange Carriers including CENX, Equinix (EQIX), and Neutral Tandem (TNDM) to simplify the delivery of Ethernet services across networks. In order to interconnect with carriers today, one-off interconnection agreements need to be negotiated with each carrier. Since Ethernet service delivery standards are not ubiquitously adhered to, carriers are challenged to interconnect without compromising services quality or support. RCN Metro’s participation in Ethernet exchanges represents the company’s commitment to expanding the distribution of its Ethernet services through these leading edge exchanges designed to facilitate these types of interconnections.
“RCN Metro has valuable assets in our local Ethernet service offerings; standardized network interconnections will make it easier for wholesale carriers to purchase and sell our Ethernet services without compromising our service differentiation,” said Felipe Alvarez, President of RCN Metro. “The Ethernet exchanges deliver an efficient and cost effective method of interconnecting on a one-to-many basis.”
RCN Metro’s Ethernet service combines the reliability and ubiquity of Ethernet with next-generation transport technology. The result is a service that delivers an efficient, fully restorable, easily managed network. RCN Metro’s Ethernet Service offers dedicated point-to-point, switched point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-multipoint Layer 2 service over dedicated access bandwidth, which enables the extension of LAN infrastructure for WAN connectivity as well as point-to-point private line services.
